It slowly began to become popular in the 1870’s and 80’s. when the game came to America the rules changed to Halifax rules. The biggest game of the year took place in the 1890’s in Montreal where the Stanley Cup was hosted. When the game was taken into the new century the game moved down to America. Equipment

In the days when hockey was first beginning, the equipment consisted of wool shirts and socks, and a thick wooden stick. The players skates were screwed to their boots and the laces were wrapped around the boots to help keep the skates on. Into the twenty first century the manufacturing of newer modern day skates was invented. The skates were a separate shoe that had a boot without a sole and had a thin sharp blade that would slice shallowly into the ice to keep the skater moving. The stick is still a simple wooden stick. The puck is a small round hard plastic cylindrical shape. The skater pads are thick and soft that would comfort the players better when impacted. Their helmets are a basic helmet that can help protect the player’s heads. The equipment used in hockey has been greatly improved.

Rules and Regulations

In the 1950’s the team consisted of 9 players but when the National Hockey League, NHL, was formed the team was cut to only 7 players. They were three forwards, two defenseman, one goalie and one rover. Back in the 1950’s there were only six teams who were named the original six. They played each other around at the different stadiums. The 1960’s brought the invention of the face mask because players began to get injured from face shots. The umpires like in baseball were to call all of the shots and make all of the calls. If the player is penalized he is sent to the penalty box and given a time out of usually a couple minutes. The rules and teams have really changed over the years.

Modern Day

The modern day sport of hockey brought the upgrade of the equipment used and the expansion of teams. Into the ninety’s the NFL welcomed ten new teams into the mix. In the twenty first century the last two current teams that were joined to the NHL were the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild. The new era of hockey brought new equipment and many new teams.
