Lacrosse
This ancient sport goes back to the time of the
Native Americans. Many tribes played the game of lacrosse. Lacrosse
used to be played over large fields with several hundred players,
and the fields could be about the size of three to four hundred
yards long. Lacrosse was played to show strength and pride among
the different tribes. When one of the teams won they were honored
and respected.
The Indians didn’t wear much padding and their sticks were made of wood and animal skins that would be cut into strips then fastened like a net so that they could catch the ball when it was passed to them. The goal posts were made out of tall trees and then a smaller log would be on top of the two. There are many similarities between the old lacrosse and the new lacrosse; it has been a popular game for many years.
Lacrosse is a fast paced and exciting game that
involves two teams. Only 10 players from each team are allowed to
be on the field at one time. There are three attack men their job
is to stay on the opposing team’s side and then when they get
the ball their able to score. The Midfielders were able to run
across the entire field, they are the fastest and usually have the
most endurance. Then there are the defenders, and the Goalies, they
are there to stop the other team from scoring. There are three
different types of lacrosse sticks. There is a short stick which is
used by the attack and midfielders. The defensive stick is used by
none other then the defenders, then there’s the goalies stick
which uses a normal size shaft that a much bigger head so that
it’s easier for them to stop the ball. The ball is made out
of rubber and was about a pound and a half. Lacrosse equipment is
very important and is a large production now a day. Lacrosse is
played by most colleges and is usually played throughout all of the
grades. College Lacrosse is taken very seriously, and has been
considered to be one of the best college sports in the US. It may
someday become a professional sport but for now it’s only for
the college youth and people who just want to have fun
