Basketball

History of Basketball

-Basketball began to evolve in 1891 when a man named James Naismith was assigned to teach a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association, or known as the YMCA. Naismith was assigned to create a new game. James combined former childhood games and decided that he would nail raised boxes in which the players would try to shoot the ball in the box. He later used peach baskets, which would later be changed to nets. Graduates of the YMCA traveled and therefore the game of basketball caught on quickly. In 1891- 1898 Basketball did not have an identity, in fact players sometimes used a soccer ball, and a set of rules were not firmly distinct. In the YMCA however games were played and people could come and watch them. It would cost 25 cents for a seat and 15 cents for standing room. Just seven years later, 1898 the first professional basketball league was formed. The players of the Professional team were paid $2.50 to play a game at home. They were paid $1.50 to play on the road. Today players are played millions of dollars for one season contract. By 1946 the Professional league had 11 cities which participated in the league. The members of the Professional league where Boston, Providence, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, Pittsburgh New York, Philadelphia, Washington and St. Luis. Now arenas would be located in large cities, which meant that more people would come to watch. This league developed into the N.B.A.

Basketballs-

Basketballs come in a variety of sizes. The youth basketball is usually around eighteen and a half inches around. Standard NBA basketballs are 30 inches around.
Mouth pieces and protective pads- Mouth pieces are used for safety purposes; it is usually made of plastic and is worn in the mouth. Also knee pads can also be worn, but are not very popular. They are used to protect your knees when diving on a loose ball.

A court-

When playing basketball a flat basketball surface is essential. Also an essential need for the game of basketball is two baskets at each end of the two courts. The baskets are to be ten feet above the court.
Basketball Uniforms- In international basketball players must wear a Uniform with the numbers from four-fifteen. For instance in the Olympics you are required to wear a uniform with the numbers of four to fifteen. In the NBA you are required to wear a uniform with the logo of your team, but a professional basketball athlete could wear a number between 0-99.

Rules and Regulation

The Basics-

Only five players from one team are to be on the field. Substitutions can be made, only when the ball is not in play. In the NBA games are played with 4, ten minute, quarters. Overtime periods shall last five minutes. Teams will switch sides at the end of the second quarter. When the ball is not in play then the time clock will be stopped, and therefore one quarter doesn’t last exactly twelve minutes. 5 or 6 timeouts are limited in one game. In a timeout, which is called by a teammate or a coach, is a time in which the team is able to re-asses their game plan. Timeouts usually last from 20 seconds, to one minute, or even sometimes 100 seconds. Officials control the game and ensure that rule breakers and violators are brought to justice.
Traveling- In the game of basketball the first rule is that you are not able to run with the ball. You must dribble, pass, throw, tap, roll, dribble, or shoot the ball.

Out of bounds-

If the ball bounces outside the court is then out of bounds. Who ever touched the ball last will then lose their possession and go on defense.

Double Dribble-

The player can not pick up the ball in between steps this is known as double dribbling. For instance, imagine a basketball player with a basketball. Now imagine the player bouncing the ball on the floor once and grabbing it. He has not committed double dribbling yet, but if he begins to dribble again it will be known as double dribbling.

Over and Back-

This violation occurs when a player passes the half court line and then throws the ball back across the half court line without interference from the other team. The player has 10 seconds to cross the half court line.
3 seconds in the key- This is a violation which can be broken if an offensive player spends 10 seconds in the opposing team’s key. A key is a rectangular box in which the bottom of the rectangle is the out of bounds line, and the top of the rectangle is the foul shooting line.

24 second shot clock-

In the NBA the offense must attempt a shot in 24 seconds. Once they shoot a shot and rebound the ball then the shot clock begins again at 24 seconds. If for instance the offense does not shoot in the 24 seconds given then they are forced to forfeit their possession.

5 seconds-

The offensive player has five seconds to shoot, pass, or dribble the ball before he will receive a five second violation. This occurs when being heavily guarded for five seconds.

Goaltending-

No player is able to interfere with the basketball hoop or the basketball during the down flight of the basketball. If goaltending does occur then the shot will automatically be successful. In order for the referee to consider goaltending it must be close to the basketball hoop.

Personal Foul-

This occurs when a defender or offensive player uses unfair advantages through physical contact. In most cases this occurs with defensive players rather than offensive players. In the case of a personal foul, if the shooter was not shooting, the ball will be taken out of bounds and given to the team who was the victim of the foul. In the case of a personal foul, while the shooter was shooting, the victim of the crime will shoot a foul shot from 15 feet from the out of bounds line. Foul shots will only be worth one point though.

Technical foul-

If a player shows un-sportsmanship, for instance by arguing with a referee, fighting with a player, kicking a ball into a crowd, or even slamming a ball against the ground. A technical involves foul shots. Sometimes if a player is out of control then they will be thrown out of a game. Sometimes players lose control and are suspended for even up to a year.
