Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty Chitty Bang BangChitty Chitty Bang Bang was the most “fantasmagorical” show to hit Broadway this year! Following the current very successful run in London, England, it promised to be one of the most memorable children’s (and adult’s) shows on the Big White Way!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is based on the book by Ian Fleming, famous for his character, James Bond. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was originally a movie from 1967, produced by the British producer Albert Broccoli, also of James Bond fame! (An interesting note: All James Bond films have, just like Chitty, a very fancy car with lots of fancy gadgets!) Albert took the three volume set that Ian Fleming wrote (while recovering from an illness), and asked famous children’s writer Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to adapt the book. He also convinced, very easily, the Sherman Brothers, Richard and Robert, to write music for the show. The Sherman Brothers were already famous for their music in Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book. At the time, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was the most expensive movie musical ever made. The Broadway musical portended to be just as lavish, and it was!

The Broadway show is complete with the eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, his two children Jeremy and Jemima, Grandpa Potts, and the “truly scrumptious” Truly Scrumptious! Of course there’s also the world famous fine four-fendered friend, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the car that rides, floats, and flies to fantastic places, taking its passengers on wonderful journeys and adventures.

The New York production is also going to be famous for trying something very different with its production. The producers have decided to change the show times, something not often successful on Broadway. Usually theater shows begin at 8:00 pm, but for this show, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, the show will begin at 7:00 pm. This is to help entice families with younger children to attend. This is the first musical to ever do that!!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was shown in the Hilton Theatre at 213 West 42nd St.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was to be a wonderful success, ticket sales were already through the roof and the show had only just recently opened in New York!! So, from movie to stage, the wonder of Ian Fleming’s imagination takes flight!! Hopefully you saw this great show, unfortunately, it closed December, 2005.
