Tony Awards are given for excellence in theatre. It was named after a beautiful actress, Antoinette Perry. It has been given since 1947; about 60 years! Directors and producers make plays hoping to excell and receive a Tony Award. It isn't just the directors or producers that can receive an award. Anybody working to help make the project a success can win an award such as the actors, actresses, costume designers, light crew, ensemble, ANYBODY!

In earlier years of this ceremony, these awards were given in plaza hotels. Now the Tony Awards are a little more fancy. With the red carpet, theatre and excellent shiny awards, the celebration is a lot more elaborate! Today we also can experience the excitement of these awards without even going to the ceremony, for it's on television! But now we can watch it in full length and not just the one-hour ceremony like it used to be.
