Phyllis Wheatley
Phyllis Wheatley was the was the first African women
poet to be published.
In 1761 a slave ship Phyllis brought Phyllis to Boston in America
from West Africa. She was around the age of seven or eight at this time. Without school education she managed to be taught by her family. After sixteen months from her arrival Phyllis had attained the English language.John Wheatley bought her. He himself was a prosperous tailor. Soon after she was bought John and his wife, Susannah named the young girl Phyllis, Phyllis Wheatley! Phyllis grew up to be a famous poet. Her collection, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral was published on September 1st, 1773.At the time she learned to read and write slaves were forbidden to do so. Still she had courage and enough of it. She worked hard and now we know of her as Phyllis Wheatley, the first African American poet!
