 Issues

There are many issues dealing with chicken and chicken industry. Chicken industry exists in many countries which means that there are many different rules and laws that regulate how chicken is raised, treated, and produced. One of the current issues is humane treatment of chicken. We all know that most chicken are raised to be butchered and eaten. However, many people argue that does not justify inhumane ways that chicken are butchered, which causes them tremendous pain and suffering. On the other hand, some people argue that it is not important how we butcher chicken since they are raised for human consumption anyway.

Another issue with chicken is raising roosters for fighting. This is an ancient tradition that existed in many countries. Today, Most countries have banned cockfighting, but it is still legal in two U.S. states, New Mexico and Louisiana, and is common in Southeast Asia. Roosters are raised specially to fight and equipped with spurs so they can hurt another rooster. Most of the time people gamble and bet on who will win. At the end at least one rooster will die. Many people believe this is inhumane and needs to be banned. But there are also people who believe this is an ancient tradition that should be preserved.

If you own a TV set or have access to Internet, you must have heard about the outbreak of avian flu. Will this horrible disease become the "mad cow" of chicken? The scary disease can be transferred from poultry to humans and cause death. On February 6,2006 the World Health Organization (WHO), reported that since 2003, 165 people developed Avian Flu and of those 88 died. That is 53% death rate! The threat of avian flu is huge, especially for people in developing countries. Besides the threat  to human life, this disease can destroy the chicken industry and affect millions of jobs throughout the world.
