A chicken is a most common bird in the
world. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, there are almost
25 billion chicken in the world. Some chicken are wild animals, but
most are domesticated and people raise them for food and eggs.
Scientists believe that all chicken came from a single ancestor
called Red Junglefowl, that existed almost 5,000 years
ago.
Cockerel is a male chicken under
one year of age.
Rooster is a male more than one year
old.
Pullet is a female under one
year.
Hen is a female over one year of
age.
All chicken are omnivores which means that
they eat both plants and animals. Chicken feed on small insects and
herbs and leaves, but they are also known to catch small mammals
such as mice!
Although they are birds, chicken are not
the best flyers and fly only for short distances.Chicken live in
flocks. They have two wings and two legs. Theatre covered by a
layer of feathers. Chicken live short lives of ten to fifteen
years.
