today but it is wild. It lives in Southeast Asia. The scientific
name of the Red Jungle Fowl is Gallus banikva or Gallus
gallus. Today there are about 175 varieties of chicken. They make
up 12 classes and 60 different breeds. A class is a group of breeds
that all started in the same geographic area and are usually named
after the geographic location. In each class there are many breeds.
Breeds are different from each other in many different features
such as shape of their body, color of their skin, or number of
toes. Each breed has many variety. Variety is based on color of
feathers, type of comb and beard.
Sometimes chicken are bred to make sure
they have certain characteristics. For example, some people bread
chicken with more meat. These chicken are part of a strain. A
strain is developed for specific purpose like making eggs or having
more meat. Sometimes genetic engineering helps develop new
strains.
