Intro

A year ago, on September 27, 2003, the strongest earthquake happened in Altay, Russia. It caused fear, people were afraid to enter their houses, everybody asked:

  • Are the shocks going to repeat?
  • How strong are they going to be?
  • Are our houses going to survive?
  • And finally – Why is an earthquake happening here in our city, on the plain???

  • Listen to the story of the Altay earthquake witness

We also wanted to answer these questions and we started working.

They don’t influence people’s life almost at all. As for strong earthquakes, there are 100 ones a year. The strongest earthquakes shake the earth not even annually, but approximately once every ten years. The problem is that they usually have a disastrous effect.

A number of scientific and popular books, articles and researches are written about the earthquake. The interest to this natural phenomenon is not surprising. Almost half of the humankind lives in the seismically dangerous areas, what means that an earthquake can happen any time there. Each year, about 10 thousand people are lost during earthquakes. The number of human victims can’t fully characterize the real power of an earthquake.

We consider the problem of forecasting earthquake very important, because the humankind needs to know more about that to prevent from catastrophic consequences. In this very project we are trying to closely look at the phenomenon of the earthquake, its causes, consequences and ways of forecasting. (2)
