In Altay there are many legends about the earthquake. One of them tells us about a monster that lives underground and make such strong movements that the earth termbles.

One legend says, "God lived on the magnificent mountains over the couds far from the people. He had forbidden to take women and dogs to the sacred place. Once a woman followed her husband there and watched the sacred ceremony. The God got furious and the whole mountain trembled, and the condemnation followed to break the coalition between the God and the people".

In the mythology of Ancient Greece, the god Poseidon - the lord of the sea - was "the earthholder" and "the earth shaker".

In India there is a legend that the god created 3 whales, on which he placed the Earth. When the whales are tired to hold the earth, they change places what makes the Earth shake.

Ancient legends about cruel monsters, which annualy demand young boys and girls as tribute, are popular even nowadays.
