Abebe Bikila was a private in the army of Emperor Haile Selassie before the Roman Olympic Games. When the Ethiopian returned at the age of 27 a month after the games with a marathon gold medal around his neck he was promoted to Sergeant. Among the 69 starters on September 10th Bikila was unknown. The Roman favorite was champion Sergey Popov with the world’s best time of 2hr, 15min, and 17 sec. Since he was there, few people gave Bikila much chance. But Bikila’s speed literally destroyed the field with a time of 2hr, 15min, and 16.2 sec - .8 seconds faster than Popov’s record time. Popov himself came in 5th. That shows that Abebe Bikila was one of the most amazing runners of the 20th century.

BBill Russell on top. How fitting! After leading the Boston Celtics to victory in the NBA Finals of 1969, Russell decided to leave the game after 11 championships and 12 seasons. Always cool and always intimidating, Russell became best known for taking defense to a new level in B-Ball. His battles against Wilt Chamberlain were legendary.

In 1961 Sandy Koufax made it big. He won the first of his four strikeout titles and 18 games. Using his amazing pitching style Koufax amazed batters. He had an average of more than 300 strikeouts every season. He also made a 92-97 record. Overall, Sandy Koufax was an amazing player
