| Abebe Bikila was a private in the army of Emperor Haile Selassie before the Roman Olympic Games. When the Ethiopian returned at the age of 27 a month after the games with a marathon gold medal around his neck he was promoted to Sergeant. Among the 69 starters on September 10th Bikila was unknown. The Roman favorite was champion Sergey Popov with the world’s best time of 2hr, 15min, and 17 sec. Since he was there, few people gave Bikila much chance. But Bikila’s speed literally destroyed the field with a time of 2hr, 15min, and 16.2 sec - .8 seconds faster than Popov’s record time. Popov himself came in 5th. That shows that Abebe Bikila was one of the most amazing runners of the 20th century. | |
