The
History of Books
The first books were made in China, on clay tablets. You may have thought that the earliest books were written on papyrus but it wasn’t until 3,500 B.C. when Egyptian papyrus came to use. Long before papyrus and even clay tablets, stories weren’t written down. Just imagine not even being able to read a story! After the papyrus, books were still being made by hand. Since book making was tiring work, the book prices were sky high and most of the time books weren’t even read. Even if you wanted to read them you would probably be reading a religious text. The making of these books was an act of worship. About 15 centuries later, books were starting to be produced with non religious text. This was the beginning of modern day reading. A decade later the first printing press was invented in 1436 and finished by 1440. Paper backs were starting to be printed by the 1800’s the machine that made them was invented in Paris, France, it came to America soon after. This new invention brought the prices of books down so much that soon everybody had books. By the way I have a quick fact that I found, did you know that the earliest paperbacks were made of cloth. |
