Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

The Minnesota gopher men’s hockey team has been national champions for two straight years. They won the frozen four in 2002 and 2003 and are looking for another crown. The gophers are in the WCHA or Western College Hockey Association. They play teams like the North Dakota Sioux and the St. Cloud State Huskies. They also play their in state rivals, the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

The current mastermind behind all the gophers’ success is Coach Don Lucia. He picks out the cream of the crop from all over the U.S. Most of his great players come from the Minnesota area, but a few come from the New England area. A few players on the gophers are Nate Hagemo, P.J. Atherton, Danny Irmen, Chris Harrington, and Tyler Hirsch. The gophers’ home arena is Marrucci Arena. The gophers go through lots of training and practice. The practices are about 2 hours long.

Hockey is a complicated and challenging sport. It takes lots of skill and strength to play hockey. Determination and teamwork are two of the many concepts needed to play Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey. Currently the Gophers are ranked 4th in the WCHA Men’s 2004-2005 season. The gophers’ record is 20-12-1. The gophers as you can tell have a lot of potential to be a great contender for the Frozen
