The macaw is the largest bird from tropical
regions. Most range from 35 to 50 inches long. The diet of
the macaw usually includes tropical fruits, nuts, plants,
insects, and even snails. Another thing the macaw eats is
red clay on river banks. Although scientists are unsure why
they do this, some believe it is to obtain needed minerals
or to detoxify poisons from the plants they eat.

An interesting fact about the macaw is that
when one macaw finds a mate, it stays with that mate until
one of them dies. Although the macaw is known to mimic human
speech, in the wild they have loud ear-piercing voices. These
birds are also believed to communicate very well within their
species.
