Poison
dart frogs are usually pretty small and feed on small insects.
In the Amazon Rainforest, most of the poison
dart frogs live on the rainforest floor and are active in
the daytime.
The poison produced by the frogs comes from
its diet. The main purpose of the bright colors of the poison
dart frog is so that its predators can easily recognize it,
therefore avoiding it. The poison, which is different for
each species, is excreted from the frog’s skin and paralyzes
its enemies, which are usually small animals. About two and
a half grams of the poison dart frog’s poison could
kill a 150 pound human.
The
poison dart frog gets its name because some South American
tribes use its poison to make poisonous darts for hunting.
Poison dart frogs generally range between
½ an inch to 2 inches.
