Rhino Beetle

Rhino Beetle on branch

Rhino beetles start their life, like most insects, as larva. These larva eat a lot of compost or rotting wood, which is usually found where they were born. Rhino beetle larva goes though 3 molts before changing into the familiar adult form. The rhino beetle is often called the world's strongest animal because it can carry 850 times its own weight.

There are more then 300 hundred different types of rhino beetle. Rhino beetles not only live in the rainforest but also in various parts of north America. The best protection they have from predators is their large size.

Surprisingly the horn of the rhino beetle is not to fight off predators, but instead used to fight off other males from feeding sites that have valuable food and it also attracts females.
