What happens to the money after the transition? | |

The old currencies of the Eurozone lose their value after 1 March 2002.
From that time neither stores nor commercial banks accept the local
money. Only national banks deal with exchanging it. In case of the coins
they guarantee to do it for 1 to 10 years, in case of the notes some for
20 to 30 years, some forever. There is a considerable amount of money
that citizens retain as souvenirs, as most of them would like to have
some of the last national notes and coins. If everyone decided to put
away only a little amount of the local money worth a few Euros, that
would mean billions of Euros. German coin collectors could sense it and
started a remarkable campaign making millions of Germans want to hold on
to the 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 pfennigs and 1, 2 and 5 marcs. |
