Diamond Properties - Hardness

Diamonds are the hardest substance because of the way their carbon atoms are bound. Carbon atoms have six protons and six electrons. In diamonds, each atom shares four of its electrons with neighboring atoms. While diamonds can shatter and burn, only a diamond can cut or scratch another diamond.
