History There is a place that is hit by tornadoes the most due to its weather and that is Tornado Alley. The area that is most effected by tornadoes is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The total of tornadoes that have ocurred there is now well over 100 and the average number of tornadoes occurred per year from 1950 to 1998 is 816. The last update on this was in 2003 so the tornadoes have been really revent. Another place that has many tornadoes occur is none other then our own town, Huntsville, Alabama. Both of these states are in Tornado Alley and are the most effective out of the many other states such as Texas which has had approximately 125 tornadoes occur per year. The biggest tornado was the Tri-state tornado. It traveled just over 125 mph in about three hours. In the year of 2004, a hiker watched and took picutures of a tornado at 12,000 feet in Sequoia National Park, California. That was most likely the highest tornado observed in the United States. The word tornado comes fom two Spanish words, tornado meaning thunderstorm, and tornar which means to turn. Tornadoes are the deadliest of all thunderstorms. One of the worst tornado disasters occurred on April 3-4, 1974, when 148 twisters struck 13 states causing more than 300 deaths.
