How a Tornado Forms

Animation of Formation and Destruction of a Tornado!

Tornado Formation

The exact way that tornadoes are formed is unknown, but meteorologists have their theories. The most powerful storm that causes tornadoes is thunderstorms. When warm, moist air and cold, dry air meet, they develop a spinning funnel and a spinning column of air is formed. This is known as a vortex. The vortex then slowly touches down to the ground, resembling a spinning top. This is what makes a tornado so dangerous. The path of the twister is very unpredictable and moves in various directions, causing destruction in every which way.
