Knights

Calvary as the name suggests were fighters on horses. The cavalry in Medieval England composed of knights, squires, and anyone rich enough to take care of a horse. Knights were of noble blood fairly rich men who could afford horses and iron armor. Their armaments included a lance, swords, and a shield. Squires were knights in training. If given permission from the knights they were serving they could engage in combat. In rare occasions, if the knight they were serving died before the squire could be knighted this squire would sell his sword to another lord (pledge his allegiance).

Knights owed their allegiance to a certain lord, who in times in war could call on them for aid. The knights composed the flank in battles. Knights normally didn't charge in to the infantry but sought out other knights in battle to gain plunder and slaves. Contrary to most fairy tales there were not a lot of valiant knights they were just rich people. A knight wouldn't go looking for a beautiful maid to rescue, unless there was reward involved and the odds were on his side. Knights dominated the battle field until the fifteen hundreds where gun powder and infantry took a more important role in war.
