Castles

Castles were first introduced to England by the Normans who were from northern France. The first castles were not made of stone but wood. Their design followed the moat and bailey idea. Most wooden castles were built on hills or baileys. They were built of wood because stone was expensive and took a long time to construct a castle. Ireland was very famous castles because it was constantly invaded. Many of their castles are still around today. Probably the most famous of the English castles is Edinburgh.
