You dive into a nearby bush, and watch in mounting horror as the townsfolk- with torches and pitchforks- yanks you from the bush and into the county jail. The reason, you discover, is aiding the thief in escape. When protesting, the townsfolk say that the thief stole a "magical artifact". You end up losing, get moved to a more secure prison, and lose the privilage to hike the trail.
