WBES THINKQUEST TEAM

We are from the deep South - ALABAMA to be exact. All of us are 4th graders and members of the Tech Tigers, a technology team. We help our teachers with computer problems. A few of us agreed to make this website and enter the ThinkQuest competition. Mrs. Harris is our sponsor and our ThinkQuest Coach. She taught us XHTML. We met everday at 2 0'clock in the computer lab to work on our website. First, we chose our topic and then we did our research. We designed our pages and then learned how to insert images and text into our site. We all drew the images for our website. We get along great and had alot of fun!

Our ThinkQuest team name is "MOUTHS OF THE SOUTH"! Janae thought of this name. She has an aunt who loves to talk and everyone in her family calls her "Mouth of the South". We talk all the time, too, so that is why we decided that "Mouths of the South" would be a good name for us.

We have learned alot about accents and dialects in the United States. We even learned some things that we didn't know about our own southern drawl!

Amberley

My name is Amberley. I am 9 years old and the youngest member of the ThinkQuest team. My hobbies are playing softball, swimming, and riding bikes. My brother's name is Andrew. My two sisters names are Amanda and Alex. I have two kinds of pets. I have a dog named Rick and I have some chickens.

I did most of the typing on the ThinkQuest team. I'm pretty good at typing on the computer. I drew some of the pictures on the site, too. I learned how to type the tags for our website and how to insert the images.

I learned

One source of our southern drawl is from people from Southern England who settled in Virginia. Later, they moved further into the south.

Jacob

My name is Jacob and I'm 9 years old. My brothers names are Joshua and Jonathan. Joshua is my twin and I'm just one minute older than him. He picks on me, that's his job. My other brother is 15. My Mom is Patricia and my Dad is Barry. I have a pet dog. He is a German Shepherd and his name is Buster. He is a very playful dog. My dad doesn't go hunting, but he'll play with me, that's his job. He plays with me in the pool, on the swingset, and the trampoline. My mom doesn't have enough time to play with us because she works alot.

My job on the ThinkQuest team was to type. I also helped write the story for the Lingo Story page. I helped to find the different expressions that people use across the United States.

I learned

In the old days, most southerners had slaves. They were from all different tribes in Africa. After living together they developed their own dialect usually called "Black English".

Janae

My name is Janae. I am 10 years old. I have a twin sister named Jericha. We both have an older sister named Johnel.

I am a photographer for our school technology team. I take pictures of things that happen around school and they are used on our website, in the newspaper, and sometimes for the yearbook. My hobbies are swimming, riding my go-cart, walking with my mom, and riding the 4-wheeler. My pets are Man, Bo, Luck, Boo, Zack, Kate, Coffee, and Bandit. I have a cat named Kitty, but most of my pets are dogs! My job on the ThinkQuest team was to do research on accents and dialects. I learned

The female slaves usually raised the white slave-owners children, so the children began to talk like the slaves.

Jericha

Hi, my name is Jericha. I am 10 and I have a twin. My hobbies are swimming, reading, running, working on the website, and riding 4 wheelers and gocarts. I have two sisters named Janae and Johnel. Janae is my twin sister. She is the youngest. I love them both. My dad is fun. He takes us hunting. My mom is the best. I don't know what I would do without her.

My sisters and I have dogs. They are beagles and hunt rabbits. Mine is Doc. Janae's dog is Zack. Johnel's dog is A.J. They are crazy (They will never learn). We have a bobtail cat named Kitty. She is very smart. She was a stray. When the dogs are out she keeps them straight!

My job on the ThinkQuest team was to type the information that we got from reading about accents and dialects. I also helped to write our story about the geese who traveled to the North. I drew some of the pictures that are on our website. I learned

Much of the southern dialects come from "Black English" dialects.

Dialects in other parts of the country started as people moved around across the U.S.

Mikala

My name is Mikala and I am 10 years old. My hobbies are softball, skating, riding go-carts, and swimming. I am also a photographer for our technology team. I have a family of 5. I have a a 6 year old sister named Malori, but she lives with my mom. I have a three year old sister, Emily and a one year old brother named Brennan. I have a step-mom and my Dad. I have 4 pets. One is a 6-week old puppy named Daizy and a cat named Boss Hog because he eats so much! I have 2 girl horses Prusilla and Doodles.

My job on the ThinkQuest team was to help design the website. I helped make the logo and helped to come up with the name of the site, "Do you know the LINGO?" I helped choose the buttons we would use and the pages that we would have on our site. I learned

...that we shouldn't judge people by the way they talk! We should accept each other's differences because we all have something great to offer!
