Chimps don't eat just
one thing. They eat a lot of things. If you want to learn more about
what chimps eat, then this is the right page for you!

Chimpanzees are omnivores
(eating plants, fruit, and meat). They eat mostly fruit. In long
dry seasons when fruit is scarce, tree seeds, flowers, and bark
become an important part of their diet.Chimps eat big fruit with
their hands. After eating for a while, chimps will know which fruit
is ripe or not ripe. Plants take second place in what chimps. There
are 80 different types of plants that chimps eat. Three of them
are leaves, buds, and blossoms.Chimps eat the least meat.Chimpanzees
don’t eat meat very often. In fact, meat is considered “gourmet”
among the chimps. They only eat meat when they hunt. When they do
eat meat, they eat almost everything, including the brain.
They also eat many
different types of insects. Chimpanzees get insects by picking them
off things and each other. Termites are the most nutritionally important.
Termites are collected by hand or with tools which are made by the
chimpanzee and specifically used for this purpose. They use the
tools like straws to suck the termites out of their mounds. They
have been observed by Dr. Jane Goodall using tools to get the termites
out of their mounds. They make the tools themselves, and the tools
work very well. (On the bottom right is a picture of a chimpanzee
using a tool that they made to get termites out of their mounds.)
They usually take some kind of stick or bamboo rod and put it in
the hole, scooping out termites and then they can proceed to eat
them. Chimpanzees are very clever creatures, much like us. We hope
