Summary:

Chapter 7

When Lenina and Bernard arrive at the Reservation Lenina watches a ceremony which she finds very disturbing. They then meet a young man wearing Indian clothes, but surprises Bernard and Lenina by speaking perfect English. He tells them that he wanted to be the sacrifice, but the town would not let him. He explains that his mother was from the World State, and during a visit to the Reservation she was injured, and then found and saved by some Indians. His father also came from the World State, and his name, Tomakin. Bernard realizes that Tomakin is really Thomas the Director, but he doesnŐt say anything for the time being. John, the young man, introduces Lenina and Bernard to his mother Linda. Linda is overweight wrinkled and missing teeth, and she disgusts Lenina. Linda tells them that John was born because there was a malfunction with her contraceptives. She could not get an abortion on the Reservation, and was too ashamed to go back to the World State. Linda then explains that after John was born, she continued her conditioning and slept with whoever she pleased, although some women beat her for sleeping with their husbands.
