Our toolkit is designed to help you teach the basics of organizing and implementing your very own service project. Here we will show you ideas and other tips for your planned project. Having your own project really sounds beyond what you believe you can do, but hey, it's not as difficult as you think it was! For further assistance you can always contact us and we will be happy to be involved.

Here on the left is Jessica, take a time to read her story, an excellent example of how a simple idea for a project can help other people. You know you can make it too.

Why start a Project?

I'm doing just fine being on the couch the whole day, why bother?

Because you should. Yup, it's not a typical entry unto your "to do" list that you start a small project, but as a responsible Youth, you should think of the possibilities on how you can make your life more productive and beneficial for others.

Because many children needs your help. From beggars on the street to orphaned children on hospices, from a young girl in your school to a teenage neighborhood next door. Yes, the list will never end but trying to extend your hands with some of under privilaged and less-fortunate ones is priceless.

Because it's a lot of fun. Perhaps you're assuming that you will need to exert some efforts and stressing obligations right? Sometimes! But think of how will the experience inspire you and other people, inspiration is a long-term benefit for you to even better your endaevors. You will feel the moral and social satisfaction afterwards!

Preparation

We are suggesting that you involve an adult in your project, so he or she can help you find contacts and approach other people for support.
  • How would you like to help? Think of your project's main purpose. eg: Fundraising for children on the orphanage, gathering people to plant a tree or even making a publication concerning issues that affect your community.
  • According to the heaviness or lightness of your aim, start calling friends and adults to assist you with your project and help you recruit even more volunteers and participants to join in. You may also want to contact your local organizations for manpower and minimal financial assistance.
  • Gather your members and brainstorm! Share ideas of an interesting agenda for this project. Decide wether this will be a one-time project or should it be annual, quarterly...
  • With the help of selected members of your group, organize the event. Tips on venues and foods and drafting your agenda can be seen here.

Get the word out
Promote your project by first designing an information layout. This layout can be used for printing small leaflets and posters. Put it up on public places, ensure that it's a legal place to stick-up and distribute the leaflets and posters. Ask permission to appropriate official in your area if needed.

This is an example of an eye-catching poster. It is made to promote an annual event called "Global Youth Service Day." You can ask help from graphic designers too! Click here.

A simple print-out of your project plan can also do. Include these things when making one:

WHY? ...have you chosen to initiate this project and activity and why you want to spread your message through this?

WHAT? ...does the project aim to achieve and what steps are you planning to take with potential participants.

WHO? ...are your target participants? specific ages will make them confident when joining in. Who will benefit from this? Both the volunteer and those they will be helping for? Who are in charge of what? People needs to know who's who. Be sure to let them know which adults are present for the project so parents will be sonfident in letting their children on. Give your contact info too!

WHEN? ...date and time is very important! be sure that the event/project will not be a hindrance to the young people's schooling.

NOTE: Encourage your target audience to involve their carers/guardians about this interest of them. Tell them to share their experiences to them so next time they will participate, their carers will be confident to intrust their children to the group.
