Political Affairs
The tsunami of December 2004 presents an opportunity for politics, both globally and locally. Globally, many western countries saw this as an opportunity to show their concerns and to improve their image abroad. For example, the United States sees this as an opportunity to show the world that it can use its military power to help coordinate disaster relief. It also tried to provide aid to Indonesia and other poor countries to show its friendly intent.
Locally, many politicians took this as an opportunity to increase their popularity by leading the relief effort and therefore winning the hearts and minds of tsunami victims.
Thailand's Prime minister did a very good job after the tsunami disaster. For instance, he personally visited the affected areas. Because of this, he received a very high approval rating for his leadership. He won the election in a landslide in February of 2004.
For some politicians, the scenario may go the other way. If the local politician was not doing a good job helping the victims, he could lose his job or his election in the future.
Nationally, large disasters like this could also expose construction projects that are not built properly, either through inadequate supervision or rampant corruption. Scandals like this could potentially bring down the current ruling government as well.
