Before an earthquake:

  • Have family discussing about earthquakes.
  • Teach children what to do and whom to contact during and after an earthquake.
  • Have an emergency plan, and make sure in case family members are separated from one another during an earthquake, everybody knows how to get back together.
  • Have emergency supplies in the house, and in the car.
  • Listen to the radio or television for information about earthquakes.
  • Remember that nothing is too heavy to move in an earthquake, so make sure to move or anchor tall and heavy furniture so that if they fall, they will not hit anyone.

Mexico's planning:
In Mexico, they have made a plan to help save more lives in case of an earthquake. They replaced old structures with new ones that give more protection in case of an earthquake. Their rescue workers, police, hospital staff, and firemen pratice simulations throughout the year to help prepare them and make their responses quicker. Subway systems are assigned specific checklist they work through in case any seismic activity occurs. This plan was made after an 8.1 earthquake hit Mexico in 1985. In 2003, a 7.9 earthquake hit Mexico proving that their plan was a success and helped decrease deaths.
