Pioneer
gold
Sometimes people made their own gold coins because of special
needs in their own communities, or because the government couldn’t
produce coins fast enough. This is a coin minted for pioneers
that lived in "Deseret," the settlement founded by
Brigham Young and the members of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Today, most of the territory
that was known to these settlers as "Deseret" is known
to us as the state of Utah.
