National Gold Bank Note
In the 1870s, Congress
authorized allowed nine different banks in California to issue
National Gold Bank Notes. These notes were redeemable in gold
coin. That means that people could give the bank a ten-dollar
National Gold Bank Note and be give ten dollars in gold coins
in exchange. Almost everyone in California used gold to buy
things they needed, so most of the National Gold Bank Notes
that have survived are worn out and well-used.
