This is the transcript of
an ACTUAL radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian
authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995.
Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95
Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid
a collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to
avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert
your course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND
LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED
BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I
DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE-FIVE
DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE
SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse .Your call.
From a
passenger cruise ship, everyone can see a bearded man on a small
island who is shouting and desperately waving his hands. "Who is it?"
a passenger asks the captain. The cruise ship captain replied, "I've
no idea. Every year when we pass, he goes nuts."
A
helicopter was flying around above Seattle yesterday when an
electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic
navigation and communications equipment.
Due to the
clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's
position and course to steer to the airport.
The pilot
saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign,
and held it in the helicopter's window. The pilot's sign said "WHERE
AM I?" in large letters.
People in
the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large
sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A
HELICOPTER."
The pilot
smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to
SEATAC airport, and landed safely.
After they
were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how the "YOU ARE IN A
HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their position in Seattle.
The pilot
responded "I knew that had to be the MICROSOFT building because,
similar to their help-lines, they gave me a technically correct but
completely useless answer."
