Delta 32
Delta 32 is a rare mutation in the human race. No, I am not kidding. Delta 32 provides the bearer with immunity to AIDS/HIV. It is also thought to ward off the Black Plague. Allow me to explain.
During the time when the Black Plague (Bubonic Plague, Black Death) devastated Europe, a tailor in the village of Eyam recieved a bundle of wool which, unaware to him, carried the fleas infested with the black plague. He was dead within the week. The village leader ordered the town sealed off to prevent the plague from spreading. A year later, a group of people passed through Eyam, expecting to find a ghost town. What they found was half the population, alive and well.
How did they ward off this plague that caused almost certain death? This is where Delta 32 comes in.
A wife buried her husband and 3 children all in the course of  a week but never came down with it. The town grave digger handled countless corpses but remained in good health. This is because she had the mutated gene CCR5 or Delta 32.  According to Dr. Stephen O'Brien of the National Institues of Health in Washington D. C.  it appears that Delta 32 is providing the survivors of Eyam's decendants with immunity to the HIV virus.
