Georges Bizet
Georges Bizet was born in Paris, France, on October 25, 1838. His original name
was Alexandre-César-Léopold Bizet. Bizet was an only son. He was
born into a musical family. His mother was a talented pianist and his father was
a singing teacher and composer. Bizet received a good early musical training.
At age 9, Bizet was accepted into the Paris Conservatory. He did well in his studies.
Bizet was a brilliant pianist and he won many awards for his musical talent.
In June 1869, Bizet married Geneviève, daughter of his former teacher,
Halévy. The marriage was an unhappy one. Bizet could not make any money
because he lacked commercial success. He made his living by teaching the piano
and as an accompanist for other people's work.
Bizet's final years had many problems. His health was ill and he was forced into
service during the Franco-Prussian War. Bizet died of 2 heart attacks on June
3, 1875, in Bougival, France. He was age 36 ½ and 5 days. This was also
the day of Bizet's 6th wedding anniversary.
