Augusto Pinochet Ugarte
25th of November 1915: Augusto Pinochet Ugarte sees daylight.
He finishes his studies in the Military Academy’s Infantry Institution, the Military College and the National Defense Academy.
1954: He is a professor at the Military College, and deputy under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Defense.
1956: He becomes a member of the military mission of Washington, and starts teaching at the Military Academy of Ecuador.
1964-1969: He is the deputy commander of the Military College of Chile.
1966: He is promoted to colonel.
1969: He becomes a brigadier, commander of the 6th continental division.
1970: He is promoted to major general.
1971-1972: He is active as the 2nd army corps of Santiago.
1972-1973: He commands over all of the continental forces.
11th of September 1973: By accomplishing successfully the coup against Salvador Allende Gossens’ socialist government, the military junta lead by Augusto Pinochet Ugarte achieves power. With this Augusto Pinochet became the leader of a bloody takeover.
1973-1974: He is elected as the president of the Governing Council.
1974-1990: He is the president of the republic.
1980: A referendum was held on the governing of Pinochet; there he got a mass of 2/3 of the votes of confidence for another 9 years.
30th of October 1984: According to official facts, 7 people lost their lives along the civilian and police confrontations in the general strike against Augusto Pinochet Ugarte’s dictatorship.
6th of September 1986: Near Santiago an unsuccessful assassination attempt was carried out against Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, Chilean president of the republic. In the attempt 6 of his bodyguards lost their lives.
1988: Just as Pinochet tried to seize another 9 years, he was no longer supported by the people; the public government returned. Yet Pinochet has carried out several constitutional changes, which allowed him and his loyalties to keep their membership in the congress, which goes along with parliamentary immunity, thus they could not be forced to stand trial.
14th of December 1989: Augusto Pinochet Ugarte’s dictatorship was finished once and for all, as the common candidate of the oppositional parties achieved an overwhelming mass of the votes in the elections.
11th of March 1990: Until this date he kept his position, after a referendum that was supposed to strengthen his authority, yet most pf the electors voted against his presidential assignment. However, even after this he kept his role as the army’s general leader until March of 1998. along with that he became an “eternal” senator (which the Chilean constitution provided to him), which meant a complete political immunity to him in Chile.
2nd of March 2000: After 17 months of forced stay in Great Britain, Augusto Pinochet, former dictator of Chile returned home. 2 hours before he was supposed to stand trial for violating human rights, he was pronounced to be mentally unsuitable.
1st of July 2002: Referring to lack of evidence, the Chilean Supreme Court have closed the investigation and trial of Augusto Pinochet blamed with multiple murder and kidnapping.
23rd of December 2004: On the weekend the former Chilean president was carried to hospital with apoplexy, where he also got his extreme unction. At the same time the Chilean Supreme Court has delayed the decision whether to continue the procedure against Pinochet. According to the prosecution, the general’s hospital treatment is also part of his defense. The former president is being charged with abuse of human rights, including multiple murder.
12th of January 2005: Juan Guzmán, the judge in the procedure against Augusto Pinochet, after a thorough investigation in the medical expertise about the former dictator health conditions, has declared: the 89 year old ex-general is in a suitable mental condition to stand trial.
