Horses are part of a group of animals called ungulates. Ungulates are animals with hooves. The ungulates are seperated into two groups. Perissodactyls are ungulates with an odd number of toes and artiodactyls are ungulates with an even number of toes. Horses are most closely related to tapirs and rhinos. Both tapirs and rhinos are perissodactyls. In ancient times horses were very small, they were an average of 14 inches tall. We can see that they probably weren't very useful. The biggest horse ever stood 6.5 feet at its withers. His name was Brooklyn Supreme, he was a purebred Belgian stallion. Look at this picture of him.
