There are two hundred and seventy heard areas in ten western states. They have a total of forty-two thousand horses and burros. The majority of the horses are in the Great Basin Desert. The Great Basin Desert is made mostly up of shrubs and steepes, mountains, valleys, juniper forests, meadows, and riparian zones. Riparian zones are areas of vegitation along water that provides food, water and cover for the horses. The horses move mainly during the day. The horses migrate to higher ground during the spring and are willing to travle two to five miles for water. When it is too hot to look for water horses will dig for it. There are about ninety to one hundred and eighty horses in a heard. Horses are always on the constant move through their home range. Sometimes they will walk twenty-two kilometers a day, but in the winter they will walk less. In the summer they will wander and graze.
