Nationalism

 Introduction

MetwalysOne of the most significant developments in the late eighteenth century was the rise of nationalism accompanying the outbreak of the French Revolution. Nationalism was an idea that believed in the rule of the local people free of tyranny rule or foreign influence to form their own nation. In many cases, the priority was to remove foreign influence. Nationalism was thus in a way, the Archilles Heel of Imperialism, for it marked the start of an undeterred effort to establish independence.

Nationalism evolved out of Europe that had grown stronger because of nationalism and filtered down to their colonies that eventually found their own expression of nationalism by resenting against the European foreign influence. Egypt followed this pattern. In this section, we will see how nationalism, one of the most important impact of the British occupation, grew in stages, and led to the eventual independence of Egypt into a sovereign nation.
