The Paricutin Volcano

   Basic Information

The Paricutin Volcano is one of the only natural wonders of the world that is located in Mexico.  This volcano is the only wonder with such a powerful force.  It is named after the city that it is located in.  The Paricutin Volcano is the only natural wonder that has enough force to bury a whole city and frighten anyone who lays on it.  Unfortunately, this natural wonder accomplished this task.

Stories of the Paricutin

On February 20 1943, this volcano buried the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro and the village of Paricutin.  When the lava flowed down from the volcano, it covered about 10 square miles of land (which is about 0.3 cubic miles).  The volcano that is now a natural wonder, gave volcanologists the chance to see the short life of the Paricutin Volcano.  It grew for about nine years and grew about 9,213 feet.  the last six months of the Paricutin's eruptions where very violent, frequent, and took many lives away from many of the towns people.  The Paricutin died out around 1952.

Why is this a Natural Wonder?

The Paricutin Volcano is considered a natural wonder because it was the fastest growing volcano ever recorded in history.  Could you believe that it grew 150 feet in just six days? Years ago, farmers could actually witness the growth of the volcano.  It was called " the volcano from the cornfields" because it was grown in a cornfield.  This is why the volcano is a natural wonder.
