Although these wonders in thee sky only last for a few seconds at a time, they are the most beautiful sight to see. They are the Northern Lights.
Many people look at them thinking, "what are they good for?", others learn to make a living out of the sights! For many years, people have stared at them and wondered what has caused them to become like this, while others had a lot of theories of their own. One person who could stare at the lights forever was Pekka Parvianen of Finland. He had a job at The Finish magazine for serious sky watchers. They had devoted a 17 page supplement to the extraordinary spectacle and the headline would be, " The Northern Hemisphere A flame." As Pekka was watching these extraordinary lights, he used well over 19 rolls of film. After he was done, he had said that nothing he had ever seen in 29 years came close to the visions that he saw that cold spring night. The above drawing, is a sketched copy of one of the pictures that Pekka took.
The Northern Lights don't just occur anywhere, they usually occur in the Northern Regions. A mixture of several gases( mostly nitrogen and oxygen with small traces of hydrogen) create this Natural Wonder. When these gases mix, the lights usually glow green, purple and or red. They are seen mostly in Barrow Alaska, Blair Nebraska, and along the Missouri River. These lights are the only thing that will get the people of Alaska outside in the middle of January!
These Natural Wonders of the World are pretty amazing and are a magnificent sight to look at. Hopefully, our families will be fortunate enough to see these wonderful sights.
