CEREBRAL CORTEX-
The Cerebral Cortex is an extensive outer layer of gray matter of the cerebral hemispheres, largely responsible for higher brain functions including sensation, voluntary muscle movement, thought, reasoning, and memory. Some of its specific functions are: how we know what we are doing in our environment (conciousness), how we initiate activity in response to our environment, judgements we make about what happens in our daily activities, controls our emotional response, controls our expressive language, assigns meaning to words we choose, involves word associations, and creates memory for habits and motor activities.
What are some of the problems that can happen when there is damage to the Cerebral Cortex?:
If the Cerebral Cortex is damaged these are some of the problems that could occur: loss of simple movement of various body parts(paralysis), inability to plan a sequence of complex movements needed to complete multi-stepped tasks such as making coffee(sequencing),loss of spontaneity in interacting with others, loss of flexibility in thinking, presistence of singel though(perserveration), inability to focus on tasks(attending), frequent mood changes (emotionally labile), changes in social behavior, changes in personality, difficulty with problem solving, and inability to express language(broca's aphasia).
