Politics

Tsunamis have enormous effect on politics around the world not just the countries that the tsunami hit. Look at the tsunami that just hit South Asia - it caused a world wide panic. In the U.S. every charity like the Red Cross and Peace Corps had fund raisers to help the tsunami relief efforts. Schools across the country had collections for the tsunami relief effort.

In the countries that tsunamis hit, politics are effected for perhaps decades.Reconstruction and dealing with the tsunami after effects will dominate politics. The tsunami will become the center of political ads and campaign slogan. The tsunami will also be used to criticize the political party that was in control at the time. Tsunamis just put an extra spin to the local politics for many years to come.

When a tsunami hits an area countries take a look at how safe their country is from tsunamis. After such a disaster like the recent tsunami in south Asia, people living on the coast get very concerned about their safety. That’s why the U.S. has just pledged 37.5million dollars in detection systems. Those 37.5 million dollars will buy 32 new detection systems.

Countries even turn aid going to the tsunami victims into political battles.
India for instance has decided to stand up for itself globally saying that it doesn’t want any foreign aid. Sri Lanka has taken over complete control of foreign so that the Tamil Tiger Rebels don’t get a hold of any aid. Indonesia has their military taking charge of the aid. When a tsunami strikes ,the area is a total mess, and for the next couple of days or weeks, that area is without politics. Immediately after a natural disaster like this, sometimes political differences are put aside. The Tamil Tiger Rebels are a good example. They have been fighting the Sri Lankan government for years, but as soon as a major disaster happens they are right there in the front lines helping their fellow man. Unfortunately, within months, the old rivalries show up again.
