A tsunami is a large wave often caused by a huge geological event. This is an important fact, and it needs to be addressed, but there is no getting away from the strange and horrible effects that a tsunami causes for humans.
From the prehistoric tsunamis to the 1964 incident in California to today’s most recent tragedy, The millions of dollars of destruction have always been second to the intense trauma that the survivors of these tragedies have gone through. Look at it this way: small children are on a beach together making a city of sand castles. The wave comes and is bigger than expected. You know how disappointing it is when you are a child and your creation is destroyed by the ocean.

| In the recent disaster in Southeast Asia with around 182,000 (twice the population of Rhode Island) people are dead from the tsunami even more from disease caused by things like bad water supplies and flooded sewers. Band Achech Indonesia (left) in the island of Sumatra, was a prosperous city with a population of roughly 225,000 people. The death toll on the city was 22,000 (the reason it is possible for this number to be larger than the initial tsunami death toll is because this includes deaths caused by things other than the tsunami such as disease.
A lot of people hear about the tsunami and think, "thank god it's over," but its not, the battle has just begun. When the tsunamis hit, it destroyed almost everything. That means no hospital, which means no help for the wounded people. There's is no shelter, which could be horror in bad weather . And possibly worse than anything else.

With all of the water systems demolished, the water mixed with the overflowing sewage system, which made the good water contaminated with disease. When you are desperate, you will drink contaminated water. So here’s the chain of events: Tsunami turns in to destruction of the needs of the population, such as food, water and shelter, making these people that survived, which are few, get desperate enough to drink contaminated water that gives them dysentery, which can kill them.
The numbers of dead and suffering are impossible to comprehend if you are a normal human. If the tsunami hit Anchorage and you were a survivor, your mother, father, sister, brother, pets, and friends could be dead. The numbers of dead from this Tsunami make Sept.11th death toll (under 3,000) seem small by comparison. The only ways to really experience it are to go to Asia and see the devastation.
