Kids Can Have A Book Sale!

Why Collect Books?

Why not donate money to charity?

All of the students here at P.S. 175 love to read. Not only do we have a big library room, but each classroom has their own library! We have student swapping books all of the time. So, we figured why not have the students bring in books that they have already read, donate them to the school, and then sell them for $1.00 each?

P.S. 175 raised over $1,200 just by selling books! Although we have tons of charities to give to we felt that our school needed a little sprucing up. Our school is beautifully decorated on the inside with our artwork and papers. However, the outside needed a makeover. We have a small garden/picnic area in the back of our school that the school uses to enjoy the warm weather. So, we took the money and had the student council buy flowers and trees to plant in our garden. This makes our courtyard so beautiful! The Rego Park community can enjoy our beautiful garden as well because it is connected to the local playground. How perfect is that?

Want to find out what we did with over $1,200 dollars?

Follow these simple steps:

Before the Book Sale:

Create flyers and posters telling the students there will be a Book Sale in the school.
On the flyers, explain to the students that they need to donate used books that are in good condition so that they can be purchased at the sale.
Pick a room and a date in the school where the book sale will be. Work with the student council leader as well as the student council. The more hands, the better!
When the students donate their books, have them bring them to the designated room.
Have boxes ready in the room that can hold the books until the day of the sale.
Have a deadline for the students to bring in books.
Ask the principal to mention the book sale during morning announcements.
Make posters to hang around the school that have the room number of the book sale.

The Day of the Sale:

Assign people specific jobs to make sure the book sale runs without problems.
Jobs:
Assign a few people to arrange the books.
Have one or two students taking and counting the money.
Have a student sitting at the pay table to stamp the books that were bought.
Have two students standing at the door to check each book is stamped.

After the Sale:

Count the money that was collected.
Take a trip to buy some flowers and trees to plant. (We chose our local Home Depot.)
Call them ahead of time to mention your school project!
Wait until a warm day and spend it outside making your community beautiful!
