Introduction

Look at the fish in the above banner. Its hard to believe that this not exceptionally attractive medium sized fish with a weird bump on its head could fetch up to thousands of Singaporean Dollars at one point in time, isn't it? We Singaporeans find it funny ourselves. Despite its mediocre appearance as an ornamental fish, it made a very big socio-economic impact on the island during the early part of 2003. Our site looks the physical facts related to this fish, more commonly known as the "Flowerhorn", its origins, as well as its hidden qualities, how it got people to pay so much for it. You will also find details on the craze, and also personal opinions and lessons learnt from the island-wide phenomenon. This fish has a very interesting background which cannot be seen at the first glance, and we hope that this site will provide you with as much information as possible to this underwater specie. Also provided in this site is a picture gallery of pictures we have taken in local aquariums, allowing you to visually admire the fish, plus an online quiz which you can take after looking through the whole site to see how much you have learnt from it.

About Us

We are a group of three fourteen-year-old students from Raffles Institution, a secondary school in Singapore. Thinkquest was adopted as our annual Research Education project. Our first time participating in such a competition, and being Singaporeans, we wanted to do a project that was unique to our country, and in the end came up with this topic about the Flowerhorn Fish, for it had a very large impact on the Singaporean society, and we thought it would be interesting to know that such a fish, which once lived in the drains of Asia, could actually fetch up to tens of thousands of Singapore Dollars here. This topic is both interesting as well as unique, and we hoped that we could share this ironic incident through the creating of a web page, and in so doing give people from other countries a glimpse into our tiny country in South East Asia and the lives of the people here.
