Chrysler began producing the technologically advanced M1 in 1980 at the Lima, Ohio, Tank Plant, and in 1982 at the Detroit Arsenal. Able to travel at 45mph and carrying a 105mm smoothbore main gun, the M1 saw its first action during the Gulf War. Manned by a crew of four, and powered by a 1,500 horsepower turbine engine, the Abrams was responsible for destroying all Iraqi armored divisions that it met during the four-day allied ground assault.
