Hurricane Camille

What Was the Deadliest Hurricane in the U.S.A.?

The deadliest hurricane that ever hit the USA was hurricane Camille. The first report on hurricane Camille was issued at about 1 P.M. on Thursday, August 14, 1969. Advisory No. 1 on hurricane Camille stated that, the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida had sent a hurricane hunting plane, to the Caribbean, which had flown right into the storm that was 480 miles south of Miami, Florida. Hurricane Camille was born near the west coast of Africa, and before it was even actually seen, its movement across the Atlantic Ocean had been tracked from weather satellite pictures. When the hurricane hunters were in the hurricane it grew dangerously stronger.

Advisory No. 2 was issued by the National Hurricane Center at 6 P.M. that same day. The advisory stated that hurricane Camille was a threat to Florida and also to the east and central sections of the Gulf of Mexico . Ships that were traveling in the areas might be affected by Camille were urged to listen to radio broadcastings about the development and the movement of the hurricane. All throughout the night several advisories and bulletins were issued by the National Hurricane Center at three-hour intervals and were broadcasted immediately.  When hurricane Camille neared the USA ’s coast, reports were given more frequently. Many of them were based on facts found out by the hurricane hunting planes and a few others were based on radar observations.

Finally it happened. About three days later hurricane Camille hit the eastern tip of Louisiana . Hurricane Camille had destroyed 5,579 houses, left 12,491 with major damage, and 25,090 with minor damage. 726 business buildings were destroyed or had been damaged badly. It killed 127 people, left over 500 people with injuries, and drowned 155 people.

Hurricane Andrew

Hurricane Andrew was a storm that hit August 24th-26th 1992. It hit Florida with the most devastating winds and power America has ever had blow across its land. Hurricane Andrew caused a total of 23 deaths and caused $26.5 billion in damage. It was the costliest hurricane in the history of the USA .

Hurricane Charlie

Hurricane Charlie hit on an unlucky Friday the 13th. August 13, 2005 to be exact. Charlie made landfall with winds of 145 miles per hour. Wind gusts reached close to 185 mph at Punta Gordo Florida where the eye of the storm came ashore. Charlie caused billions of dollars in damage and left thousands of people homeless in Florida. It came in with Hurricanes Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne. These are some famous hurricanes I know of. My Grammy had quite a bit to say about this one "I remember the shingles popping off the roof, and the wind blowing as loud as a train. I remember my grapefruit blowing off the tree and over the hills, and I remember the trees blowing down and the dark power-outages." is what she said.
