Water Transportation
Importance
There
are many different reasons why water transportation is very important. For
example, water transportation transports 20% of America’s coal. That’s
enough to produce 10% of yearly electricity in the U.S! Also, it carries 60% of
U.S grain exports. Today’s tugboat and barge industry moves 800 million tons
of raw materials each year! Waterway transportation is the most money made mode
of commercial freight transportation. This is because of the enormous capacity
of the barge. For example an average barge is 15 times greater than one ril car
and 60 times greater than a trailer truck. People have used water transportation
to explore, settle, and trade with foreign countries. Ships have carried food,
clothing, and many other objects from other places. Did you know that each year
ships move nearly 125 million tons of liquids? So, a lot of our lives depend on
water transportation.
Who
Uses Water Transportation?

Water
transportation goes very far back in our world. Early Egyptians made boats out
of logs, hollowed tree trunk, even papyrus reeds. The Phoenicians were the
so-called best sailors that sailed the Mediterranean. They sailed about 1000
B.C. Around 4500 B.C, Egyptian had their first use of the sail. Pioneers used
log rafts when ever possible, since water was easier to travel than land. Many
people use water transportation. And today, the army and Navy use water
transportation.
Need
For Water Transportation
We have
water transportation because it is the safest mode of commercial freight
transportation. Also, it has the least number of accidents of any mode. Also we
have water transportation because since it is so safe, many objects are shipped
on it. In conclusion, water transportation is very safe.
Types
Of Water Transportation
There
are many different types of water transportation. Some examples of water
transportation are...jet skis, barges, ferries, cruise ships, and canoes. There
are also steamboats, deep-sea merchant ships, tugboats, and towboats, coast
guard ships, and even police ships. So next time you talk about boats and ships,
you now know a whole lot more!!
