AIDS IN AFRICA - IMPACT |
| |
|
|
With the sub - Saharan Africa being the the most HIV/AIDS affected area in the
world, an estimated 26.6 million people are living with HIV/AIDS and
approximately 3.2 million new infections occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa as at
2003. In just the past year the epidemic has claimed the lives of an estimated
2.3 million Africans. Ten million young people (aged between 15-24years) and
almost 3 million children under the age of 15 are living with HIV. More so, an
estimated twelve million children have been orphaned by AIDS in Sub-Saharan
Africa. |

The Sub Saharan Africa is the worlds HIV/AIDS most
affected region. |
|
|
Not all parts of Africa are equally affected by AIDS, in some areas the
epidemic is just surfacing while others are experience an explosive outbreak.
For example, while over 20% of the adult population in Zambia and south Africa
are HIV positive other countries like Somalia and Gambia have just seen about
two percent of it's population being infect. Since the impact isn't equal in all
African countries we will break this section down to various regions in Africa. |

| |
| Southern Africa |
| |
Countries in southern African countries are
mostly affected by the AIDS epidermis in the whole Africa. The HIV
prevalence rate for countries in this region is over thirty percent (30%).
The table below contains the prevalence rates of countries for some
southern Africa countries.
| COUNTRY |
HIV PREVALENCE RATE |
| Zimbabwe |
33.7 % |
| Botswana |
37.5% |
| Swaziland |
38.6% |
| Lesotho |
31.5% |

|
| WESTERN AFRICA |
| |
West Africa is relatively less affected by HIV
infection, but the prevalence rates in some countries are on the increase.
The table below contains the prevalence rates of countries for some west
Africa countries as at 2001.
| COUNTRY |
HIV PREVALENCE RATE |
| Nigeria |
5.8% |
| Central Africa Republic |
12.9% |
| Côte d'Ivoire |
9.7% |
| Cameroon |
11.8% |
Not until recently HIV prevalence in Nigeria has not being as high as
5.8%, in 1993 it was only 1.9% but now with about 3 million people
infected, the prevalence rate is almost as high as that of Cameroon.

| |
|
|
|
| |
| Eastern Africa |
| |
| HIV infection in Eastern Africa varies between
adult prevalence rates of 1% in Somalia to 15% in neighboring Kenya. In
Uganda the countrywide prevalence among the adult population is 5%, but
recent HIV infections appear to be on the decline in several parts of the
country.
